5 Marvel Rare Pairs You Should Be Reading Right Now.

1. James Rhodes/Tony Stark

Why Should I be Reading It? Simple. They hold hands. They have matching MIT rings. They went to college together. They hug and share lunches and call each other cute nicknames. Sure, not every display of affection between men has to be romantic but for those who enjoy slash googles Tony and Rhodey hit all the buttons. Where do I start? Just As They Wished It To Be is a lovely MIT series that expands into polyamory.

2. Pepper Potts/James Rhodes.

Why Should I be Reading It? Pepper/Rhodey is a very grounded ship. Two people who are equal parts practical and extraordinary, meeting through a mutual friend who just happens to be a superhero. Where do I start? Unfortunately, Pepper/Rhodey fic is hard to come by. Destronomics writes a few lovely Pepper/Rhodey oneshots. War Stories is a fluffier example.

3. Darcy Lewis/Natasha Romanov.

Why Should I be Reading It? Fanfiction is partially about finding the unlikely character combinations and reveling in them. Darcy Lewis is a goofy, but surprising competent character while Natasha Romanov is a cold, competent character with a softer side. Compare and contrast. The addition of Darcy also makes for good fluff fic. Where do I start? This soulmates AU or this feline-related fluff fic.

4. Natasha Romanov/Tony Stark.

Why Should I Be Reading It? For one, it's comic-canon in both the 1610 and 616 universes*. For two, there's a kindred spirit between Natasha and Tony; they both share the bond of working towards redemption and losing their true loves. They also have a good set up for a villain-hero relationship, as both characters share morally ambiguous pasts. Where do I start? For the 616 universe, there's Someone to Spend the Last Day in the World With, a very smutty (that is adults only) fic that ties together several popular comic events. There's also this link, which leads to the TonyNat ao3 tag with the polyships filtered out.

5. Natasha Romanov/Sharon Carter.

Why Should I Be Reading It? Largely because guilt-ridden older spy falls in love with a young, still idealistic agent is the perfect romance plotline. Otherwise, because there's a certain amount of fun to deciding that two characters who never interact in canon deserve some shared screen-time. Where do I start? Light of the Grave, for a slow build + origin story. Our Hearts on Fire for body-swapping with a side of asexuality and Sam/Steve.

*616 is the primary marvel universe, as begun by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee. 1610 is the Ultimates marvel universe, where everything is grim, deaths are permanent, and there's weird sexual overtones aplenty. The MCU is earth-19999, if you're wondering.
